| PURPOSE AND GENERAL
DESCRIPTION |
The Chicagoland
Bicycle Federation, a non-profit advocacy group,
manages a city-funded education and encouragement
program called Mayor Daley’s Bicycling Ambassadors.
The Bicycling Ambassadors teach motorists and bicyclists
to better share city streets. They do this bys peaking
face-to-face to members of the public. Teams of Ambassadors
deliver bicycling expertise personally in demonstrations
and conversations in public places, at community
events and to children at summer day camps. |
| REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
AND WORK ENVIRONMENT |
The Bicycling
Ambassador report to the Program Director. The Bicycling
Ambassador will also:
- Work 35 to 40 hours per week.
- Work with a team of 2-4 Bicycling Ambassadors
at outreach events.
- Work outdoors and indoors on any day of the week,
and with occasional evening hours.
- Travel directly from home to work sites, by bicycle
and public transit. Work sites will include street
festivals, shopping and commercial areas, public
parks, and schools throughout Chicago.
- Successfully complete a five- to ten-day training
course that covers bicycle handling, bicycling
and traffic safety, media relations, and conflict
resolution (provided by the program).
- While on duty, wear an Ambassador uniform provided
by the program.
- Wear a bicycling helmet while bicycling and during
presentations.

| DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES |
The Bicycling
Ambassador will have these duties:
- For six weeks during mid-season, supervise one
or two Junior Ambassadors (trained high school
students who work with the Bicycling Ambassadors).
- Describe how to bicycle safely in traffic (to
adults and children) and on sidewalks (to children).
- Describe to motorists how to drive safely alongside
bicyclists in traffic.
- Promote safe road sharing to bicyclists and motorists
at publicity events.
- Provide, both orally and in literature form,
bicycling information at street festivals, shopping
and commercial areas, public parks, and schools
throughout Chicago.
- Give classes, demonstrations, and presentations
in formal and informal settings.
- Bicycle to, from, and at events and presentations.
- Work with community groups, aldermanic staff,
teachers, police officers, business associations,
volunteers, sponsors, and other city organizations.
- Speak to newspaper, radio, and TV reporters about
bicycling.
- Evaluate (in written reports) presentations given
and events attended.
- Market the program to event organizers.
- Assist with program administrative tasks as necessary.

| ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS |
The candidate
should have the following qualifications:
- Can communicate effectively with people of all
ages, abilities, cultural groups, economic statuses,
sexual orientations, and disabilities.
- Speaks in a friendly, concise, and accurate manner.
- Very experienced in bicycling in urban traffic.
- Owns a bicycle in good working condition, and
an approved bicycling helmet.
- Physically fit and able to work outdoors all
day and in any weather.
- Comfortable speaking with strangers.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
- Works well in an unstructured and informal environment,
with limited supervision.
- Works well in a team, and fosters team spirit.
- Good at solving problems, thinking creatively,
and self-motivation.
- Prompt and punctual.
- Can pass a background check in order to work
with children.

We prefer candidates
with these qualifications:
- Fluency in a language other than English, especially
Spanish.
- Experience teaching bicycling safety.
- Experiencing speaking to or writing for news
media.
- Experience working with or supervising teenagers.
- Familiarity with the city of Chicago and its
layout.

We require candidates
selected for interview to successfully complete a
bicycling road test prior to the interview. Candidates
must bring their own bicycles and helmets. |

who bicycle, thereby making Chicagoland a better
place to live, work, and play. CBF believes that
whether people bike for exercise, to work, or for
fun, they should do it enjoyably. But each day, the
region’s bike riders contend with problems
such as heavy traffic, limited bikeways, and careless
drivers. Since 1985, CBF has worked to attack not
only these problems, but the policies that favor
automobile transportation at all costs. A non-profit
corporation, CBF has its headquarters in downtown
Chicago.

Since 2001, CBF has managed a city-funded program
called Mayor Daley’s Bicycling Ambassadors
(MDBA). The Bicycling Ambassadors teach motorists
and bicyclists to better share city streets. They
do this by speaking face-to-face with members of
the public. Teams of Ambassadors deliver bicycling
expertise personally in demonstrations and conversations
in public places and at events. The direction of
the program changed for the 2005 season. The new
focus is peer to peer bicycle safety education at
Chicago Park District day camps. Safety education
is performed by a team of two Junior Ambassadors
(JA) and a full time Ambassador who acts as the manager
of the team. This six week period is referred to
as the Junior Ambassador season. |
| REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
AND WORK ENVIRONMENT |
The Junior Ambassador Coordinator
will:
- Work 40 hours/week, predominately Monday through
Friday at the Chicago Department of Transportation
office
- Occasionally work outdoors and on some weekends,
in both the day and evening.
- Report directly to the Program Director of the
Mayor Daley’s Bicycling Ambassadors.
- Travel directly from home to work sites by bicycle
or public transit. Work sites may occasionally
include events at street festivals and public parks
throughout Chicago.
- Occasionally ride a bicycle during the work day.

| RESPONSIBILITIES |
The Junior Ambassador Coordinator
will
- Manage the After School Matters – Junior
Ambassador (ASM-JA) training program.
- Recruit and hire staff for the ASM-JA program.
- Create training plan for the ASM-JA Instructors.
- Supervise four After School Matters Instructors
from January to June.
- Manage the ASM-JA program budget, purchase necessary
supplies, investigate and secure sponsorships,
maintain inventory of all equipment.
- Edit and update ASM-JA job training curriculum.
- Work with partners After School Matters, Chicago
Park District, Chicago Department of Transportation,
Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, and participating
schools’ administrators to insure that all
interests of the program are met.
- Help assemble staff training materials for the
MDBA and JA programs.
- Assist the Program Director in the hiring of
the full time Bicycling Ambassadors.
- Assist the Program Director with Bicycling Ambassador
training that covers bicycle handling, bicycling
and traffic safety, media relations, and conflict
resolution.
- Assist the Program Director with the supervision
of the six Bicycling Ambassadors from May to September.
- Schedule events and create and distribute schedules
for the six week Junior Ambassador season.
- Manage and coordinate the Junior Ambassador summer
work program.
- Supervise 16 Junior Ambassadors from June to
August.
- Work with community groups, aldermanic staff,
teachers, police officers, business associations,
volunteers, sponsors, and other city organizations.
- Speak to newspaper, radio, and TV reporters about
bicycling. Function appropriately as the city’s
bicycle safety spokesperson

| QUALIFICATIONS |
- Experience working with diverse communities which
includes, but is not limited to, the capability
to communicate well with people of all ages, abilities,
cultural groups, economic statuses, and sexual
orientations.
- Experience teaching bicycling safety. Candidates
who are experienced with the Bicycling Ambassador
campaigns and materials and expertise delivering
Ambassador messages are preferred.
- Detail oriented.
- Prompt and punctual.
- Can get work done in an unstructured and informal
environment, and with limited supervision.
- Works well managing a team, and fosters team
spirit.
- Good at solving problems, thinking creatively,
and self-motivation.
- Writes and speaks in a friendly, concise, and

SALARY AND BENEFITS |
$25,000 – 30,000 per year
depending upon experience and skills. The Chicagoland
Bicycle Federation offers a progressive benefit program
that includes health, dental, and retirement options. |

Other
After School Matters Instructors
After School Matters Instructors lead the 16-week After
School Matters – Junior Ambassadors apprenticeship.
After School Matters Instructors work in teams of two to
teach the bicycling curriculum to 25 teenagers at two locations
in Chicago. Curriculum includes bicycle mechanics, bike safety
and public speaking. After School Matters instructors are
hired by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation in the fall.

Mayor Daley's Junior Ambassadors
Junior Ambassadors are teenagers who work with Mayor Daley's
Bicycling Ambassadors for six weeks in the summer. Teens
are eligible for hire if they successfully complete the 16-week
After School Matters – Junior Ambassadors apprenticeship.
Junior Ambassadors are hired by the Chicago Park District
and Mayor Daley's Bicycling Ambassadors in the late spring.

Mayor Daley's Bicycling Ambassadors
Mayor Daley’s Bicycling Ambassadors are the City of
Chicago’s bicycle outreach and education specialists.
Ambassadors attend events across the City of Chicago, encouraging
people to use their bicycles safely and more often. The Ambassadors
provide face-to-face education by engaging people in discussions
about safe bicycling. They also give demonstrations to kids,
teens and adults. The Bicycle Ambassador season is from mid-May
to mid-September, Ambassadors work full-time during this
season. Mayor Daley's Bicycling Ambassadors are hired by
the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation in the spring. Please
